Bid or Buy Great Russian Composers: Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov Description: "Only $13.19 at Bid4DVDs. These informative biographies present a revealing look into the events, people and places that influenced the creation of the composer s major works and tell the story of the impact that Russia had on the history of western music.

Nikolay Rimsky- Korsakov was one of the greatest composers of the Russian nationalist school, as well as a great master of orchestration and music theory.

Rimsky-Korsakov was born on March 18, 1844 in Tikhvin, Russia. He studied piano as a child, and in 1856 he was enrolled at the Naval Academy at St. Petersburg, but continued his musical studies.

In 1861 Rimsky-Koraskov became an associate of the Russian composer Mily Balakirev, the dominant figure of a group of young, nationalistic composers including Aleksandr Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky and Cesar Cui. Together with Rimsky-Korsakov this group of composers became known as The Five.

So high was Rimsky-Korsakov's reputation, that in 1871 he was engaged to teach composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His first professional appearance on the podium took place in St. Petersburg on March 2, 1874 when he conducted his Third Symphony.

From 1886 to 1890 he conducted the Russian Symphony concerts in St. Petersburg. He also completed Borodin's unfinished opera Prince Igor in 1889 and re-orchestrated Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov in 1896 after the deaths of the composers. As an orchestrator, he had a notable influence on the Russian composers Igor Stravinsky and Aleksandr Glazunov.

Rimsky-Korsakov died in St. Petersburg on June 21, 1908 leaving a permanent influence on the music world."
