He was uniquely honored by being awarded both a Nobel Prize (1925) for his contribution to literature and an Oscar (1938) for Pygmalion. His writing reveals his fear of intimacy, prudishness, shyness, and idealism. Political and economic socialism, a new religion of creative evolution, vegetarianism, and spelling reform were several of his causes. His plays and essays, never written for sheer entertainment’s sake, were the vehicles for his theories. Shaw used G.B.S. as his spokesman for all his platforms. Shaw began his career with five unsuccessful socialist novels, moved on to become a music critic for a London newspaper, and began to write for the stage in 1855. Some of his plays include Man and Superman, Back to Methuselah and Saint Joan. Always outspoken and unconventional, with a barbed humor and wit, Shaw was known as much for his personal conduct, as he was for his plays." |
