The setting is a World War I POW camp, where three French prisoners (a nobleman, a bourgeois, and a Jew) plan an escape under the watchful eye of their blue-blooded warden (Erich von Stroheim.) When the escape plan is devised, the French nobleman (Pierre Fresnay) must decide if his loyalty rests with his class or with his compatriots (Jean Gabin and Marcel Dalio).
